Silchester is a picturesque country village situated on the north border of the
English county of Hampshire. It is steeped in history, dating back to before Roman times, when it is known to have been a focal trading town, Calleva Atrebatum, in the south of Roman-occupied Britain. Modern-day Silchester is still a traditional close-knit community, centred around the Village Green, which itself is flanked by the village Primary School, the War Memorial, the village Public House and the Village Hall (where all Silchester Players' productions are staged).

The mediæval parish church of Saint Mary is situated some distance from the
village centre, being just inside the confines of the walls of the nearby abandoned
roman town of Calleva; it is always recommended to be
visited if walking the perimeter of the roman ruins. The Village Green is the venue for the traditional English sports of cricket in the summer and football (North Americans and Australasians please read this as "soccer") in the winter. The public house is the Calleva Arms (oft frequented by the Players after rehearsals and shows, and an ideal meeting place for patrons before and after performances).

The pub serves fine ales brewed by Gales and has a wonderful menu of both traditional English fare and more exotic meals, all excellently prepared and served. Over the years, the various publicans, their families and staff have always been great supporters of our activities, for which we would here like to thank them.

On the west side of the village is Silchester Common, an area of outstanding
natural beauty and ideal for walks through to nearby Pamber Forest. For visitors to the area, the Romans Hotel provides splendid accommodation in the heart of the village. |
